11 held as net closes on illegal workers

ELEVEN Chinese nationals were detained by Immigration officials after raids in Adelaide's northeastern suburbs targeting illegal construction workers.


Since last December, 20 Chinese nationals have been detained in Adelaide. All were working as plasterers.


"It is the responsibility of employers to check with the department that all people they hire have the legal right to work in Australia," he said.
Employers hiring illegal workers face fines of up to $13,200 and two years' jail. Companies also face fines of up to $66,000 for each illegal worker if convicted. Those with information on illegal workers or those breaching visa requirements should call the Immigration Dob-In Line on 1800 009 623。

ONE of 11 Chinese nationals detained in a raid by Immigration officials on Monday has escaped custody.

The alarm was raised just after midnight at the Britton St, West Richmond, address.

The man was detained along with ten others under investigation for illegally working as a plasterer in the construction industry.
