City parking fines worth more than fees

PARKING fines earned Adelaide City Council $1.86 million more than fees paid for legal on-street parking last financial year.

The council reaped more than $9.2 million from parking fines in 2008-09 and just under $7.36 million from on-street parking fees.

It also earned nearly $25 million through UPark facilities, up from $22.46 million in 2007-08.

At least 12 of Adelaide's 19 metropolitan councils increased their revenue from parking fines last financial year.

Residents and Ratepayers Association president Kevin Kaeding said increased parking fine revenue should be used to pay for parking infrastructure.

Adelaide City Council last month introduced new parking conditions on War Memorial Drive near Adelaide Zoo for the school holidays to improve turnover when large crowds flock to see the pandas.

The council has converted 61 previously unrestricted parking spaces to four-hour parks.

Sam Talbot, 20, and Millie Burt, 17, visited the pandas yesterday as extreme heat kept crowds away.

They said families trying to spend a day at the zoo could find the new parking time limits difficult.

"It would be a hassle for families if they want to go to the zoo for the whole day," Mr Talbot said. "It's paid parking all around the zoo so more people will have to come out and move after four hours."

Councillor Anne Moran said the changes meant the car parks would "turn over a bit better" but conceded there "would be losers".

"I'm sympathetic to students and maybe people working at the hospital who usually park there, but we have to try to accommodate a huge tidal wave of demand," she said.

Charles Sturt, Holdfast Bay, Onkaparinga, Playford and West Torrens councils collected less in parking fine revenue last financial year than in 2007-08. Unley and Walkerville did not provide figures by The Advertiser's deadline.

我也被罚过，太郁闷了，那条黄线都已经浅的远看都看不出了。。。。好几十大洋哦，而且是拿车的第一天被罚的，太狠了
