Wake Forest University (WFU) Demon Deacons Football Players Taken in 2010 NFL Draft - 2 Selected
The Wake Forest University (WFU) Demon Deacons football team had two players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. Wake Forest competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and despite having a football program that has traditionally been mediocre at best (411 wins and 593 losses all time) has begun to contribute some key players to the NFL draft as of late.
In the 2010 NFL Draft held in April in Radio City Music Hall in New York City the following two players from WFU were selected:
Brandon GheeChris DeGeare
Brandon Ghee went in the third round to the Cincinnati Bengals with the 96th overall selection. The 6'0" 190 pound cornerback is an athlete that Cincinnati is hoping can immediately improve their porous secondary.
Born in June of 1987 in Fayetteville, North Carolina Ghee was a standout high school athlete at Jack Britt High School where he was a threat on the football field on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football. Brandon earned all-state honors as a cornerback and garnered the accolade of all-region for his area in North Carolina as a wide receiver. Ultimately Brandon picked Wake Forest University over larger school from which he had athletic scholarship offers including the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
The decision that Brandon made to attend Wake Forest over more traditionally dominant football schools was largely influenced by his older brother Patrick Ghee. Patrick, born three years before Brandon, played football for the Demon Deacons before beginning his professional football career with the Seattle Seahawks.
Later in the 2010 NFL Draft two rounds after Brandon Ghee was taken by the Bengals, Wake Forest teammate Chris DeGeare was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings in round five with the 161st overall selection. At 6'4" and 325 pounds Chris is a large offensive guard that the Vikings hope to have helping protect their quarterbacks for years to come.
Chris DeGeare has found himself in Minneapolis from his hometown of Chandler, Arizona (outside of Phoenix) by way of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (where Wake Forest is located). The Minnesota Vikings are known for having a tough defensive line that is anchored by sack master Jared Allen and hope to build their offensive line into an equally formidable unit.
Both Chris and Brandon aspire to follow in the footsteps of former Wake Forest University teammate Aaron Curry who was taken in the first round with the number four overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Curry has already established himself as a NFL starter and is expected to be a future pro bowler. Brandon Ghee has the most in common with Curry in that both men played together on the defensive side of the ball at Wake Forest and even more coincidentally both players are originally from the city of Fayetteville,Google, North Carolina.
